Stifle (Knee) Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD)

Stifle (Knee) Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) in Dogs

Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is a joint disease that affects young, large and giant breed dogs. It occurs when cartilage in the joint doesn't develop properly, leading to damage and potential joint instability.

Symptoms of OCD in Dogs

  • Limping: A noticeable lameness, especially after exercise.

  • Pain: Sensitivity to touch around the affected joint.

  • Swelling: Visible swelling in the knee joint.

  • Stiffness: Difficulty getting up or moving around, especially after rest.

Diagnosis of OCD

To diagnose OCD, your veterinarian may perform a physical examination, X-rays, or advanced imaging techniques like MRI or CT scans.

Treatment Options

The treatment for OCD depends on the severity of the condition. Treatment options include:

  • Rest and Medication: In mild cases, rest and anti-inflammatory medications may be sufficient.

  • Surgery: In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged cartilage and stabilize the joint.

Post-Operative Care

After surgery, your dog will need to rest and recover. Your veterinarian may recommend specific care instructions, such as:

  • Confined Rest: Restricting your dog's activity to prevent further joint damage.

  • Pain Management: Administering pain medication as prescribed.

  • Physical Therapy: Undergoing physical therapy to help restore joint function and strength.
