Cat Vaccinations

Essential Protection for Your Feline Friend

Why Vaccinate Your Cat?

Vaccinations play a crucial role in protecting your cat from a variety of serious and sometimes fatal diseases. By vaccinating, you not only keep your cat healthy but also help protect other pets and the local feline community.

Key Vaccines for Cats

Rabies Vaccine

Required by law in many areas, this vaccine protects against the rabies virus, which is deadly and can be transmitted to humans and other animals. Rabies vaccines are typically administered as an annual or tri-annual vaccine.

FVRCP Vaccine

This combination vaccine protects against three common and potentially severe feline diseases:

  • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR): An upper respiratory infection that causes sneezing, eye discharge, and fever.

  • Calicivirus: Another virus that leads to respiratory issues and, in some cases, mouth ulcers.

  • Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper): A highly contagious virus that affects the immune system, leading to severe gastrointestinal symptoms and can be fatal.

Feline Leukemia (FeLV) Vaccine

Especially recommended for outdoor cats, the FeLV vaccine protects against feline leukemia, a viral infection that suppresses the immune system and increases the risk of secondary infections.

When Should Your Cat Be Vaccinated?

Most kittens start their vaccinations at about six to eight weeks of age, followed by booster shots every few weeks until they are around 16 weeks old. Adult cats may need booster shots annually or every few years, depending on the vaccine and lifestyle.

Benefits of Vaccinating Your Cat

  • Protection Against Disease: Vaccines help build immunity to severe illnesses.

  • Improves Longevity: A healthy cat has a higher chance of living a longer life.

  • Community Safety: Vaccinating your cat helps reduce the spread of infections within the cat population.

Risks and Side Effects

Vaccines are generally safe, but as with any medical treatment, there may be side effects. Common side effects include mild swelling, low fever, and fatigue. Severe reactions are rare but can happen. Consult your vet if you notice any unusual symptoms after vaccination.
