This article pertains to the requirements and regulations regarding getting a city license or a county license for your dog. All rules and requirements for receiving a dog license are determined and set by the city and county. We are required to follow them. All fees and penalties are set by the city or county and can be changed at their discretion. We have no control and are required to charge these costs, no more and no less.

What you need to license your dog…

A valid rabies certificate is required and it must say on it that it is a rabies certificate and signed by the veterinarian or stamped by the hospital (clinic) that administered the vaccine. If your dog has been spayed or neutered since the last licensing, you must bring in the spay or neuter certificate and this too must say that it is a certificate.

City Dog License/City Cat License

The City of Stockton issues permanent lifetime dog and cat tags. Once your dog or cat has been issued a permanent tag they will not be issued another unless the original is lost. You will have to renew that tag when the rabies vaccine expires. We sell city dog licenses year round

County Dog License

We sell county licenses year round. The cost of the license is $8.00 with proof of spay or neuter, $16.00 for un-neutered males and females, or dogs with no proof of spay or neuter. Replacement tags are $1.00 (plus you need to bring in your paper copy of the license).

A county license is valid for one year from the date that the license is issued. There is a 60 day grace period, the late fee of $22.00 is added to the total when appropriate. A valid rabies vaccination is required for the purpose of dog licensing. When the rabies expires or is going to expire in the coming year you will receive the following message on the renewal slip:

“Your dog’s rabies vaccination has expired or will expire before the end of next year’s license term. You must include a copy of the new rabies certificate issued by your veterinarian”

So whether the rabies is to expire in 1 month or even 11 months, if it does not go thru 12 full months, another rabies vaccine is required. This vaccination must cover the entire period of the license and cannot expire any time during that year, except in the case of a one year vaccine for dogs under 12 months of age (in which case any vaccination will be accepted as valid).

A delinquent penalty of $22.00 will be accessed for any of the following:
1. 60 days after any dog license has expired.
2. 60 days after a dog has reached four months of age.
3. 60 days after acquiring a new dog.
4. 60 days after becoming a new resident to the county or city.

All fees and penalties are set by the county and can be changed at their discretion. We have no control and are required to charge these costs. We charge a $2.00 processing fee for animals vaccinated for rabies at another veterinary facility.
